Family Life Education Services: A Comprehensive Approach
KVCAP Family Life Education Services is part of a statewide program that promotes
quality family life education for Maine’s students.
Our goal is to assist schools with the development and implementation of a
comprehensive K-12 family life education program.
Our Philosophy...
Sexuality involves the whole person throughout the life span;
how we think about our relationships and ourselves.
Parents are the most influential teachers of family life and
sexuality.
They model values, attitudes, and behavior for their children.
Family life education provided by schools, religious groups,
and community agencies supports, but never replaces,
education in the home.
How Services Are Delivered...
Consultation Services include assistance with the development,
evaluation, revision, and implementation of a K-12 health curriculum, particularly
as it pertains to family life and sexuality; support with the formation and
continuation of a health advisory committee; and assistance the design and execution
of parent programs. All consultation services are tailored to meet the individual
needs of schools.
Professional Development opportunities are provided to enhance
school staff’s ability to deliver quality family life education in the
classroom. Training sessions range from hour-long workshops to full day trainings
and in-class modeling. Teachers are also given support and resources during
the curriculum
implementation phase.
Guest Speaking is provided to K-12 public school students
and their parents on a variety of sexuality topics, including but not limited
to: decision-making and communication skills, qualities of friendship, family
roles, sexual abuse prevention, puberty, sexually transmitted disease prevention
(including HIV/AIDS), contraceptive methods (including abstinence), and reproductive
health care.
Resources available include a lending library of current family
life and sexuality curricula, videos, pamphlets, teaching activities, interactive
games, and books for all ages.
